Only touches on sector investing
There is nothing about timing or switching from one sector to another. Sector investing can be very volatile if you buy and hold. You need to know when to exit a sector and when to buy.

Not bad, not great.....
If you're new to Industry Sectors and want to learn alot about each one then this book is excellent for you to start. If you already watch sectors and their rotations then there really isn't much new in the book. It is definitely well written and very easy to understand. If anything, it re-inforced concepts and strategies I had forgotten. I wish it had incorporated some analyzing from a Technical charting viewpoint. There was none at all. All in all, it is a very positive book covering the different sectors of the market. I found it to actually be very motivating to follow the markets more closely.

Excellent Guide for the Beginner and Intermediate Investor!
As the authors clearly indicate in the preface, this book is geared toward the beginning and intermediate investor. Written in a clear and concise manner that avoids excessive jargon, the information educates the reader about investing in sectors while providing valuable insights and practical advice.

Divided into 12 chapters, the book focuses on the sectors of primary interest to the "average individual investor." Specifically, the sectors covered include: Technology, Financial, Healthcare, Real Estate, Utilities, Energy and Natural Resources, and International. Although investing in international stocks is generally not considered a "sector," the inclusion of the international arena as a sector provides a useful perspective on this area.

In addition to the valuable content, the authors have an engaging writing style that does not hinder the information presented by them. The book is actually entertaining and inspiring.

Overall, "How to be a Sector Investor" is an excellent book on investing in sectors. Having researched a number of other books in this area, this one far surpasses other resources.

Outstanding !!!
I have read all 3 editions of this book over the last 25 years, with outstanding results ( The 1959 "How I Turned $1,000 into One Million Edition", the 1969 "How I Turned $1,000 into Three Million Edition" and the 1980 "How I Turned $1,000 into Five Million Edition ")

I strongly suggest the How I Turned $1,000 into Five Million edition if you can get your hands on one,
written well over 20 years after the original edition it's much harder to find then the previous editions but it's also most up to date and has much more information than the previous editions, well worth the the trouble trying to obtain it since Mr. Nickerson had 20+ years of extra experience in real estate which was reflected in the last edition

Mr. Nickerson was one of the few people who grew richer each year till the day he died in 2000 using the techniques he outlined in his books

A must for every one interested in real estate investing
William Nickerson and his classic book HOW I TURNED $1,000 INTO ONE MILLION IN REAL ESTATE IN MY SPARE TIME has probably created more millionaires than any other book in investing history.

It simply is a masterpiece of common sense advice, no matter what type of investing you are contemplating

What makes Nickerson's book so good?

His writings are crammed full with practical and real guidance on real estate investing with a proven technique for making money that really works.

No get-rich-quick hype. No motivation speeches or excessive cheerleading. No nothing down promises of instant wealth or easy profits.

Just tons of genuine advice real estate investors need to hear.

Nickerson's method of making money in real estate is so common and understood people still speak about "Nickersoning" properties more than forty years after his original book was published in 1959

Nickerson's book is filled with real world advice. He offers readers the same situations they would find in their world. Sample advertisements that could have been pulled out of any newspaper. Reality based properties with defects and flaws often trying to be hidden by their owners. Brokers that try to mislead with phony price estimates and bogus numbers. This is, unfortunately, the way the real estate world really is. It isn't all peaches and cream. Most people are honest but notice I said most, not all.

Contrast this almost cynical approach with the silly advice many real estate books offer readers. Instead of shrewd and often unscrupulous owners attempting to disguise property defects to maximize profits, we meet naive and motivated sellers who will allow buyers without jobs or credit to purchase their property equity on a nothing-down basis. Or better still, even loan these buyers the broker's fee and closing costs to do so! So many real estate courses and gurus offer a world filled with dumb and hypermotivated sellers to show how their techniques would work in theory, but Nickerson prepared readers for what actually exists in the modern real estate world.

Sadly, William Nickerson died in 2000. He wrote books on other subjects but he will always be known for his original 1959 real estate masterpiece and its later revisions which also contain much more infromation then the original like HOW I TURNED $1,000 INTO FIVE MILLION IN REAL ESTATE IN MY SPARE

cool book!
lots of information, good for starter!! cool book!

Exhaustive on chart patterns, but ............
As a work in the year 1962, the author with his good writing skill and his lavish but clever use of charts and figures, deserves a salute from all who appreciate the power of TA.
However, though market psychology doesnt change, technology and the speed and means of information distribution do, leading to shorter business cycles and thus trends that confirmation of which through "visual only" chart patterns almost always come too late. The situation is even worse in that "traps" in trend following are so frequent in today's highly competitive market when power traders with the help of deteriatives fully exploit the stop loss orders of mass investors.

I dont mean to undermine the value of this book. I just wanna say that there are many alternatives that cover TA wider and deeper. This book can be a low cost reference book in chart patterns. It just cannot provide a compeat course on TA without the introduction of other tools like Fibonacci, Moving Average, MACD, Stochastics etc. Afterall, TA is just a tool for money making. There's no point not to take a more productive route to achieve the goal.

Survives the test of time
I can't believe this book was written over 40 years ago, even before the Beatles first appeared on Ed Sullivan! I guess it only goes to show that technical analysis is valid and does work. Many of the patterns shown in today's books also appear in this book. Trends, moving averages, support and resistance, head and shoulders, double tops and bottoms were all known concepts back then. Candlestick charting wasn't known (in North America) back then and seems to be the only thing missing from the book.

This book is a great introduction to technical analysis, well written, and a very good value for the cost. The book is still being printed and read four decades later is proof that the concepts are valid and worth reading.

Good Education
If the current round of corporate accounting fraud hasn't awakened you up to the usefulness of charting, maybe this book will. After having tried a pure fundamental analysis approach in my investing for years, someone finally convinced me to look at charts, which I considered to be the same level as reading tea leaves -- au contraire. After spening the past two years studying technical analysis, I am happy to report that this is one of the better books on the subject, and inexpensive, too. This book, along with websites like TradingMarkets.com, will give you a fantastic basis in technical analysis.

valuable resource
This book is a valuable resource for any economist interested in the subject of household portfolios. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of research on portfolios, including theory, data sources and distributional and institutional aspects. Much of the work presented isn't especially original, but it's all carefully and thoughtfully done and usefully collected in one place. The cross-country comparisons are insightful and new. Overall, this is required reading for those interested in this field.
