good book
this is a fun book to look at.

save your money
... and read the online documentation instead. The authors state that this handbook "adds to the online help". In a way that's correct. It may serve as a print out version of the online help if you are too lazy to click through the help desk. The latter, however, is for free.

The Matlab 5 Handbook
I found the Maltab 5 Handbook very usefull, not only with the general information such as basic operation, but also with its explanations of the Matlab toolboxes, which I found difficult to understand in the Matlab book provided with the software. Also its in depth, but step by step explanation in using the Matlab Editor for Mathematical program writing. All in all I rate this book very highly and a must for all matlab users.

Excellent Book
This book is a good book for both novices and people who have some experience with matlab. It starts from the easiest at the beginning to teaching you doing complex jobs in the end. The examples in the book are clearly explanied. You can just finish everything in good guidlines and so on. So I should suggest this is a good book for those who are engineering majors and need to use matlab for some hw.

Hopeless book for any purpose
The book has a very limited reference to MATLAB syntax. MATLAB helpdesk is far more useful than this book. Don't waste money on it.

Generous engineering examples
I thought the book displayed several engineering excercises with fully-explained script files. I recently employed part of the 'conic' file derived in this book to help solve a problem at work dealing with eccentricity! It also isolated the animation process rather well.
