A brief introduction, certainly not "mastering Simulink"
I have been using Simulink ever since it's born in early 90's. I got this book because I have "Mastering Simulink 2" from the same authors. Few years ago, Simulink official manual is poorly written in the sense that a lot of important information were left out. "Master Simulink 2" was useful then. Starting Matlab 6, MathWorks has put in a big effort to roll out its official manuals, especially on Simulink 4. Therefore, this new book has little value (no more information) on top of the existing manuals.

This book has a few nontrivial c-mex file examples that are pretty much the only useful pages I can get some benefits from. The official manual "Writing S-Function" covers a lot more detailed materials to show user how to write c-mex, Fortran-mex, Ada-mex files with Simulink, which is the essence of building any real world design applicaiton. The book did not talk about Simulink Performance Tools, which is a very useful side product to work with Simulink.

Overall, for any beginner who can not access the official MATLAB 6/Simulink 4 manuals, this book is a good choice to solve some simple "textbook" problems. But I doubt anyone can learn much from this book to accomplish serious, pratical, and real-world design applications.

very helpful code
I find the book very helpful, especially the Matlab code. I am not using the mechanics portion at this time. I would like to see toolboxes on plates of all shapes treating frequency, deflection and stresses for all the usual boundary conditions. - That would be a good sequel to the book.

I am a mechanical engineer working in the aerospace/defense sector. I recently attended an introductory Matlab class. I really liked Matlab, it is a powerful tool. I was looking for more material to read and books which combine Matlab with mechanical engineering. This book did that very nicely.

I recommand against purchasing this book
I bought this book for my Introductory Engineering Computation course in college. This book did not serve its price for couple reasons. First, the index is poor. Too many of the fundamental concepts are not included here. The examples are poor and insufficient also. These are my personal opinions, but almost everyone in my class agreed with me. My professor recommended us to have some kind of reference book on computer programming for the future use, but I sold this book because I knew it will not help me, and I wanted my money back badly.

Best book!
I think this book is a excellent book. I favor in its graphic section.

Sorry book didn't meet your needs
I'm sorry Mastering MATLAB didn't meet your needs.

The book has been a good seller and has been praised numerous times on the MATLAB newsgroup.

Best Matlab text
This is the single best general-purpose text on Matlab published to date. It includes a lucid tutorial on basic principles of Matlab programming for new users. It also effectively documents all Matlab topics in depth, and provides illustrative programming examples in each area. While the book is perforce not as detailed on every Matlab topic as the Matlab-supplied documentation, the authors have done an excellent job in selecting and organizing the most important reference material, and have presented it in a manner that facilitates rapid retrieval.

I refer to this book constantly, and consider it to be indispensable for the serious Matlab user.

Good for the basics
Most of my needs are fairly simple: some arithmetic, some algebra, some graphs, all as part of what I was really working on. Matlab is a helpful tool with legible syntax, and gives a good introduction to the first few dozen things I needed.

Matlab is very extensible. There are lots of specialty packages, GUI extensions, and hooks for custom programming. Fine. That's way past what I want right now. This gets me into Matlab and gets my job done.

Maybe experts want something more, but this is a good first book for anyone already familiar with programming.

Good book for control engineers.
Matlab is a powerful simulation tool for control engineers. This is a good book for enough practical examples and easy read. This book gives enough background for any simulations in control engineering. For implementation with microchip "PowerPC Programming Handbook" is the only other book you need. Having minimum necessary theoretical background and these books, you can make any electro mechanical systems work.

Covers MATLAB basics well, poor on programming applications.
I bought a number of copies of this book for our departmental library. It serves quite well as a general reference on MATLAB usage. The sections on matrix manipulations, graphics and strings are fine. However, the section on Control Flow is very poor. The power of MATLAB is that it provides an extremely efficient, matrix-based, programming language. This is glossed over in one short chapter, with only trivial illustrative examples. I still refer my students to the book but, for motivating examples, I also refer them to the book by Charles van Loan.

One of the best available book on the MATLAB language
I had used the author's previous edition and found it to be just fair. This new edition, which concentrates on the latest version of MATLAB is an excellent book and a vast improvement. Gone is the simple reproduction of MATLAB help files. This book is a good tutorial in that it provides many examples and procedes from the most elementary concepts to the quite advanced; it is also an excellent reference containing a brief discussion of the many functions that are available but cannot be discussed at length. The user can always access the help files to get the syntax correct. There may be a "bult-in" function that they have missed, but it must be very obscure. I would highly recommend this book for both the MATLAB beginner and for the experienced user who may not be entirely familar with the capabilities of version 5. Be advised however, that this is a book about MATLAB and not tutorial in linear (matrix) algebra. Dolores Etter's books (also by Prentice-Hall) are more suited to that purpose.

Very good reference
I'm an experience programmer and I learned Matlab from this book but I never really read it. Typically, I used it as a reference, looking up a function when I needed it. I'm just amazed that after 1 year (of full time matlab programming, I wrote a matlab toolbox myself), I'm still using the book. You find what you're looking for easylly from the index. It's clear, short but very deep and detailled and the chapter are cleverly organized. That's the best programming book I've been using. I would like all of them to be like that.
