Very Well Written....
This book is very well put together. The material is presented in, at times, a jovial manner(hard to do with an instructional computer text). It's easy to understand and the authors have an incredible grasp on the subject matter.

wow it was so romantic
I loved the part where the little dog got run over by the truck and little billy ran after him

Nice book, but sloppy editing
I found this book to be a useful addition to the Matlab user-manual. Editing, however, could have been better. There are simply too many little annoying writing and spelling errors, and the coverage of certain Matlab commands sometimes lacks a logical structure. Having said that, I still would recommend the book for Matlab users who want to explore advanced graphics or GUI-design.

Not a Tutorial and GUI Coverage is Limited
Despite the promise of this text (Graphics AND GUIs, not just graphics), only one chapter (out of 10) is fully dedicated to GUIs. It provides ways to do most everything, but some things, such as exclusive radio buttons, can be implemented better using other source code (from MATLAB documentation or from online resources) as examples. However, the explanations of handle graphics and general graphical functionality are very useful (for example you can graph R^3 functions with adjustable transparency), and although it is not perfectly understandable at times, it is certainly better than most of the MATLAB resources (especially the standard documentation) you may find out there.

Before expecting to program GUIs, it should be advised that the reader should know a programming language similar to MATLAB's; C would be the most useful to know since MATLAB's language is based on it. That said, there are many well-commented code examples to follow to improve your understanding, but if you have a hard time following the code, the book often won't clear much up.

Since there are few MATLAB books covering graphics and GUIs, this book may be the best to have at the moment. Still, one should buy this keeping in mind that it is most useful to those who already have background in programming. It is not a tutorial.

Excellent Reference and Learning Tool
This book does a good job of going into the details of handles and properties to allow the reader to get a good feel of how to use the tools available. There are also good examples in the book. I have worked with quite a few different languages so I found it very enjoyable to read, but I don't know that a beginner will have a good feel for the execution of code associated with a user action (ie Buttondwnfcn) or not. I think if they take time with the examples they can get a good understanding though. Excellent book!

A Quick Introduction...
I started hearing about MATLAB when I started going to college to do my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. I took a C++ class and I really enjoyed the power of C++ in problem solving and logic.

Then came MATLAB which is a class that is required to be taken by all EE students. I got this book because it had the word "quick". Time is a very important factor when it comes to learning a new language, whether a living language (like French) or a programming language (like C++ or MATLAB).

This book is really a nice way to get you started with confidence. I rarely use the assigned book for the class, I use this one instead. Very easy to read and step by step instructions.

Highly recommended for anyone who's just started working on MATLAB.

Even after you get used to MATLAB, this book can be used as a reference book to find some important commands with examples and illustrtions.

Good job...
This book lives up to its title. It is a good overview and reference for beginning Matlab users. It covers all of the basics and is a good place for the novice to start. This book is both reference and practice guide with lessons and exercises. As stated below, it will not be particularly useful for advanced users, but it doesn't aim to be. Matlab's applications are so vast, that it would take many volumes to cover all of its advanced capabilities across different disciplines.

The books that come with the software are extremely weak (by design) and the only comparable beginner's book I came across is the one they give you at Mathworks' training classes. Either way, this book is a good buy.

Very good for beginner...
Although this book didn't cover many of advanced usages,it is very good for beginners. It is well organized and thin,so I caught up quickly and worked out my assignments by it. I recommend it to the beginners and who wants to learn MATLAB within a short period.

As an introduction to Matlab, this book was great
I found the text to be very informative. The index was exceedingly useful. As a student who was thrusted into learning Matlab without any formal instruction, I found this text to be a "grade-saver." This text has excellent figures. An explanation next to various lines in the sample programs was an exceptional feature. I recommend this text to any student or Novice who, on short notice, must have a working knowledge of Matlab.

A no nonsense introduction to Matlab 5/6
This book is more of an introduction to Matlab 6 than 5.It claims to cater both beginners and advanced users.I use Matlab 6 for my research in Communication and Signal processing.Having worked on Matlab 4 , I doubt whether it can be a serious introduction to advanced users. The material is fairly concise and easy to read. All examples are simple and easy to implement straight away after a first reading. It covers almost all important sections to prepare you for any field you would like to work on with Matlab 6.

It has a full chapter on "Simulink" which is really nice having. The are bountiful examples and three practice sets.I would have loved to see a full section on " Files ".This is a drawback.Apart from some minor shortcomings this is a fairly good introductory book.
