Not well prepared as a book
As a book, I don't think it is well prepared. A lot of equations can be put into appendix and more descriptions can be done on the underlying physics, modeling approach and the meaning of the algorithms. Others like computation/speed trade off of each approach/algorithm are worthy to be addressed too.

Also, I have seen duplicated (almost) paragraphs for expanding a one-dimension solution to n-dimensions that is not necessary to be put into the main body of the book

Equations Galore
This book contains an abundance of equations, which put me to sleep. I think it would gain a wider audience if it included some real-world applications coupled with matlab example programs. The 259-page book only contains 17-pages of matlab code.

Author's note
I am writing this review to counter the previous anonymous review, and as there does not appear to be an author's review page. Forgive me for giving 5 stars, but I would hardly have given it none! This book is meant for those interested in algorithms for frequency estimation, and the statistical behaviour/performance of these algorithms. It necessarily contains lots of nice equations, as these are needed to understand the problems and solutions properly. It is not meant to be bedtime reading. Seventeen pages of useful Matlab code would seem pretty generous to me - the book is not a Matlab Primer. My programs are also available from my web page.
These are corrected versions of the ones in the book (there were a few typos).

ChemE Undergrad view
This book isn't bad, but it does leave a lot to be desired. I was hoping for a comprehensive desk reference on commands, syntax, and maybe even suggestions on strong and concise code for frequently used and frequently problemmatic routines (ie, iterations and for if elseif until stuff). If you are also looking for this, DON"T GET THIS BOOK. If you have some limited programming knowledge and just want to get an overview of Matlab so you can play with it, this would be a fine book. It's written so that it is meant to be used hand in hand with the often inscrutable matlab help files. But if you need a more authoritative source for lengthier and more difficult programs, look elsewhere.

An Excellent Primer
I have just finished teaching a semester course on Mathematical Programming and Modelling with MATLAB. The students each obtained a copy of the book and I worked through the book with them. The book has very good exercises but I augmented these and, more or less, sat back and watched the students teach themselves in front of the computers. Some of the students had no programming experience at all. This text allows for that situation and gives good advice to the novice. All the students passed the exams, some with 100%. I have the exams as TEX files, if anyone is interested to see what the students can learn in thirteen weeks with the aid of this book. The book is slightly dated now and a few of the MATLAB functions, such as SETSTR, have become obsolete. Of course, this is not a problem and I recommend this book to both students and lecturers.

Excellent, one of the better introductions
This is a very helpful introduction to Matlab, which can be used by complete beginners and also more experienced users. I think this is one of the better if not the best of the current batch of introductory Matlab books.
In addition to the usual material there are good simple discussions of logical vectors, GUI's, vectorizing code, simulation and numerical integration/differential equations- enough to give you a sensible start.

Stachowiak and Batchelor
Tribology is an extremely complex field that encompasses a vast variety of scientific disciplines and includes the work of such scientists as Newton and Raleigh. Stachowiak and Batchelor have produced a technical guide suitable for students, professional engineers and experts alike. It is a complete reference for tribology encompassing such diverse material as lubrication methods (Boundary, EHL etc), design and condition monitoring.

The authors have a knack for presenting otherwise inaccessible material in a manner which is easy to digest. Material, sourced and adapted from an extraordinary array of reference sources, is combined with innovative diagrams that complement the text rendering explanations of exceptionally high clarity.

Programs, based on the theory presented, are included at the rear of the book presenting the practicing engineer with invaluable tools for the design of tribological devices.

Review: Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB
Review Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB By Delores M. Etter

I teach numerical methods at B.S. and graduate levels, and have found the book very useful because it introduces the MATLAB operating environment and illustate it by means of engineering problem solving.

We use three tools in our numerical methods courses: advanced programmable calculators, high level language programs and mathematical commercial languages (MATLAB). All three options are important, but we feel that MATLAB provides a powerful and relatively easy way of work in this context.

The part II of the book (numerical techniques) is not a complete coverage of the numerical methods. However, the techniques presented here are well selected and constitute a good basis to apply the operating environment MATLAB. For a numerical methods course, it will be necessary to supplement this material with other books to cover the customary content of this subject.

I like the clear style of Dr. Etter. The examples selected for problem solving are interesting and of diverse areas. The student's opinions are, generally, favorable. Finally, I would like to recommend this book to teachers, students and professionals of engineering who uses the computer for problem solving.
