Good but bad Excel support
Adequate, but not OriginalIn light of recent corporate shenanigans with off-balance sheet products, it is unforgiveable that this book doesn't address how lack of value can be disguised using off-balance sheet products. Total return swaps, an off-balance sheet financing tool, isn't discussed, and credit derivatives, another off-balance sheet tool aren't even discussed. For coverage of these topics and offshore vehicles, read "Credit Derivatives" by Tavakoli.
An excellent resource for DCF applications, but...

Bargin Bin OnlyThis book is not the place to start if you are new to spreadsheet modelling and/or risk modelling. The CD included is severely limited with the bulk of examples void of formulas and code. However, the book is not explicit enough to be a good "How To" and the risk methodologies are not explained in depth enough for a newbie to put into practice.
If you are a practitioner, you will find some nifty tricks, reminders, and some cut'n'paste vba that would take you ~15 min to write. However, the book is simply not sophisticated enough to put into practice.
The book is most suited to a recent MBA with some time on his/her hands to goof around in excel; an intern tasked with building a spreadsheet quickly; a practitioner that needs a jumpstart or wire frame for a task; or, perhaps, an accountant or finance geek that wants to understand business line concepts better.

Like the program itself, this book focuses on "registers" for checking accounts, consumer loans, assets, and credit cards. Nelson explains how to set up and maintain these accounts, and then shows how to convert their contents to tax-form entries at the end of the year.
If you want to learn how to store options transactions--something Quicken can do if you follow a special procedure--Mastering Quicken 99 can't tell you what you need to know. However, there's a solid amount of information in these pages about using Quicken to track business finances, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll (but most people who need to track business finances do so with a different program).
Coverage of securities transactions is good, but somewhat narrowly focused. If you want to know how to record stock, bond, and mutual fund transactions, this book has the information you need. It also explains obscure transactions--like capital-gains distributions from mutual funds--in some detail. --David Wall
