The 4 Corners Disappoints
Disappointed in the effort. Didn't know whether I was reading a management theory book or "Pastoral Theory For Carolina Basketball Fanatics", Dean was almost to good to be a real person and Chadwick mixed too much of his pastorial experiences into the book so that you couldn't translate it to "us" in our work environments. As a Dean fan for over 40 years, a true role model, I just had a hard time trying to get to the last page. Very disappointing for the most part, even though I practice some of his principals even without reading the book, I really didn't find as much insight as I had expected. Mr. Chadwick needs to stick to the pulpit and not give up his Sunday job just yet!

Adds focus to good leadership
Dean Smith was the coach of the University of North Carolina/ Chapel Hill Basketball team for 36 years. This book was written by David Chadwick, one of his former players who is currently the Pastor of a large Church. He reflects upon his university experience with Coach Smith as well as the lifelong impact that experience has brought him. He adds the reflections and residual affection of many other UNC basketball alumni, some now quite famous like Michael Jordan, to emphasis how these particular 12 principles were operationalized though this man and this sport. The 12 principles are truly worth examining and applying in a universal way. I think it is clear that Dean Smith paid great tribute with the expression of his talents and skills, which contributed beyond an athletic program. The opportunity is presented to expand these into a formulation of leadership objectives that blend healthy values, long term vision and deep personal meaning. If you are not a basketball fan then the text could be somewhat tedious when wading through the illustrations. That notwithstanding, it is still relatively easy to enjoy the value of these principles and compare them with how you may be thinking, feeling or envisioning yourself and your management approach. This book can be made a study or a quick read, either way it is worth the time.

Dean Smith is simply the best!
This book is for anyone who is looking to be more successful in life

The scrappy spirit of Horatio Alger is alive and well in success guru Brian Tracy. He may not be a household name yet like his colleagues Warren Bennis and Anthony Robbins, but (his publisher tells us) he still lectures hundreds of thousands annually on personal and professional development, including top cats at IBM and Arthur Andersen. This, his latest of some 10 books (including the "bestseller" Maximum Achievement), is exactly what its title suggests--100 maxims and MOs everyone must learn and live by to make it big, broken down into the laws of Life, Success, Business, Leadership, Money, Selling, Negotiating, and Time Management. Each law is followed up by anecdotes and quotes through history, plus bulleted points on "How You Can Apply This Law Immediately," which provide welcome structure and practicality.

In fact, Tracy's 100 laws are so cheerily practical, such an astoundingly uncomplicated affirmation of good old American bootstrap self-determinism, they recall the days when Alger's fictional bootblacks and newsboys finally made it big through pluck, elbow grease, and wide-grinning high hopes alone. (And, consciously or not, Tracy does seem to reside in a boys' world: among the countless men of means he cites here--from Emerson, Twain, and Lincoln to Henry Ford, Sam Walton, and, uh, Jesus Christ--this reviewer counted a whopping two women.) At times, Tracy's laws read like a Rotarian's shameless plug for capitalism ("The free market is the most efficient way for millions of people to have their needs met at the lowest possible cost"), an expression of Nietzschean contempt ("People are poor because they have not yet decided to become rich"), or, in a few instances, the kind of declaration that sets survivors of totalitarian regimes all a-tremble ("Power gravitates to the person who can use it most effectively to get the desired results"--yikes!).

That said, Tracy's pronouncements are more than usually correct; an unfailing boost to the indecisive, underconfident, or fatalistic soul ("You are completely responsible for everything you are and for everything you become and achieve"); and even occasionally astute, especially in matters of sales ("Top money-earners in sales are viewed as consultants, helpers, counselors, and advisors to their customers, not as salespeople"), where he had his own humble beginnings. You won't find anything especially new in Tracy's 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws, so think of it as all the best advice for improvement of your self, career, and business you'll ever read or hear, packed into one turbocharged go-getter's almanac. At the book's start, Tracy promises us that just by writing down 10 of our goals in the first-person present tense ("I actually AM too rich and too thin!"), eight will have come true in a year's time. I ask you: Did even your own mother ever have that much faith in you? --Timothy Murphy

The 100 ABSOLUTELY UNBREAKABLE LAWS OF BUSINESS SUCCESS
Brian Tracy has done it again! This is an encyclopedia for the business person with a desire to succeed! Easy reading, a FANTASTIC reference book! He lays it out very simply for the busy person who doesn't have time to go thru many words to get to the main point! A MUST FOR THE ENTREPRENEUR! That is...if you want an edge on success! GRAB THE BOOK! Pat Chipman, Lifestyle Management Enterprises

YOU MAY HAVE READ IT ALL BEFORE-BUT READ THIS REGARDLESS!
For the last four years I have read all of the self-help, business, financial, and psychology books I've come across. Brian Tracy's tape set; The Psychology of Success was the first audio experience I had with this genre of material. From that time on, I've read, or listened to almost all of Mr. Tracy's material. While I can't say that this is a better book than Maximum Achievement, it is every bit as good. Brian Tracy may not use material which he can totally call his own, he portrays it in a way which relates more to us in our time than his predecessors. I loved this book. You will too! Some day I hope to meet him and thank him personally for how much his motivational materials have changed my life.

Powerful--it exploded my business
The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success is 300 pages and 8 chapters of powerpacked information that will help any business.

The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success will show you how to:

* Attract and Keep better people

* Produce and sell more and better products/services

* Control costs more intelligently

* Expand and grow more predictably

* Increase your profits, and much more.

The fourth law in chapter 60 was very beneficial to me. The ideas in this book exploded my business. Nobody does it better than Brian Tracy.

Extremely unhelpful
I bought this book, hoping to learn something new about communication skills, what I found was a list of common sense every day advises, which I'm sure everyone is familiar with, this book did not help me at all, it would probably help someone who came out of jungle, for this book is as basic as they come.

No help
When I purchased this book, I was expecting to find new ways to improve my communications instantly. What I got from this book was a list of common sense items. Only about 10 % of this book helped. I expected more.

keeping the book at my fingertips for a constant resource
I keep this book next to my office desk and use if frequently for a resource for ideas when giving presentations or planning any kind of a meeting. The information contained in this book is very valuable and is always at my fingertips. Thank you for this wonderful book making communication easy and fun.

Provocative guide to a fuller life; touches the heart.
This little book is an easy read, organized by subjects and written in brief, single-page, thought-provoking essays. One can spend ten minutes on a section, walk away and ponder, and return whenever time allows without losing the thread of the book. It is almost a recipe book for life for those who have lived through the acquisition-is-all 80s and long for a more fulfilled, balanced life. It is highly appropriate for males or females, especially for those just starting adult life or those hitting the midlife "questioning" time. If you stop to think about it, most of what is in this book is something you once knew or could have figured out on your own, given enough time. But since Lemke and Diedrich have already done that and laid it succinctly before you, you have the option of moving forward, using their formulas or advice, and deciding whether it works for you. I liked the sections on keeping perspective, work, and family, but my favorite was the one on personal culture -- a road map to help you know what kind of person you want to be, and how to get there. Despite its readability, this book isn't an easy-answer book. It asks some hard questions, and for those dedicated to finding that richer life, the work is just beginning!

A "keep to your bedside book"
This book is the type you can not put down once you start reading it. It is very easy to reference to it and it reminds you of the important things in life. It's make for a very nice gift to anyone you love.

Depressed procrastinators beware
I've had depression for over ten years - a disease that saps you of the motivation even to get out of bed - with heavy doses of anxiety over the things I had to do, wanted to do, "should" do... in fact, I was pretty much consistently overwhelmed and driven by fear. This book didn't fix that problem - meds and cognitive therapy books did - but this book was GREAT to read while procrastinating. After a couple of chapters, I'd lurch off my butt and get going. (Not an easy task with fatigued depression.)

But this book had an unexpected side effect. Not only did it motivate me short-term, it gave me lots of long-term help. Steve Chandler's outgoing and fearless philosophies have etched themselves into my brain over countless re-readings. It's not just a "motivation" book - it's a book about living life to the fullest. Some of the tips have nothing to do with motivation, per se - like singing to get a great confident speaking voice, getting over social embarrassment, and finding what you love to do. In fact, I think those chapters outnumber his motivational pep talks. That would be a negative selling point, if it hadn't had such a great overall effect.

There are also several chapters about planning. I swear, before I'd read this book I hardly ever wrote a list. Now, I've got them stuffed all over the place. Writing lists is a *little* motivational... but overall, I think it's done more for my career. I'm coming up with more and more creative ideas to make money.

I wanted a kick in the pants, but what I got was an attitude adjustment. Oh well... thanks, Steve.

Better Yourself through applying this book to your life!
100 Ways to Motivate Yourself is definitely one of the better self-help / leadership books I have read. The one part of this book that is quite unique is that Chandler often starts with a quote, then he presents an typical example and finally tells a brief short story. I find this to be quite refreshing in these types of books as Chandler covered a wide array of topics from taking action, looking at things from a different angle, using your imagination, setting goals, turning off your TV, relationships, etc.

I believe the key ingredient in getting long-term value out of this book is to highlight the quotes/stories you love and integrate them into your daily life. Practice what you read if it ties in with your values. Hope this helps everyone.

Condensed , but Powerful
The 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself is one of the audio-books that made me take some serious action! I went from poverty to riches, and I'm not only speaking of riches in the quantity of money!

The message and concepts are clear and concise, it is pretty simple to grasp them and use them. Go thru this tape atleast 15 times and make some notes as you go, apply them and use them on a daily basis, and you shall manifest that which you desire. No kidding...

What this tape really did was help me organize some of my knowledge, which I acquired from various sources. With that in mind I would also recomend you to read the book, which probably is alot more profound.

And finaly, a warning to those looking for a quick fix, you won't find it in this tape! ACTION IS REQUIRED!

A practical and inspirational guide to the Future
I really found this book to be a superb combination of practically and vision. It is a great read, precise and thought provoking. It makes you really want to jump out of your seat and participate in the creation of the future. One really important point among many is that we cannot move forward, adapt and be innovative by relaying on the past as a point of reference. The only way to really be successful and prosperous is by dropping our old parameters, learning from future and applying it to the present. I have read this book twice. I highly recommend it to those who do not want some else eating their cheese. I look forward to Mr. Grulke next book.

The future is not what it used to be
'Ten Lessons from the Future' is the ideal books to help MBA students conceptualize the challenges of the future and to break open the prison of contemporary thinking. Grulke's first hand knowledge of trends that will shape the next decade, as well as his keen synthesis on how disruptive technology will shape the future makes this book one of the best business books on the shelf. Any predication of the future is precarious at best, but Grulke paradoxically paints a believable picture of an increasingly fractal environment. This book needs to be compulsory reading at any Business School who wishes to prepare their students for the challenges of the future.

10 Insider Secrets(TM) Career Transition Workshop: Discover Your Ideal Job In 24 Hours - Or Less!
Published in Paperback by 10 Step Corporation (21 May, 2002)
Author: Todd Bermont
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

Awful!
This book is a terrible waste of a tremendous amount of money. Halfway through you are asked to make a list of jobs you could do, then pick the ones you like. Hasn't everybody thought of this? If I had any idea as to what kind of careers were available to someone such as myself I wouldn't need a book like this at all. Not only do I wish I had my money back, I'd also like my time back too.

Thought Provoking!
For months, I had been struggling with being laid off and trying to figure out how to re-start my career after being with the same company for over 20 years.

This book was just the medicine I needed. Bermont does a good job of asking thought provoking and insightful questions that make you really think about the situation you are in and the best means to re-capture career satisfaction.

If you want a Myers-Brigg study or a book that tells you your ideal career then this book is not for you. However, if you want a book that will make you dig deep into your passions, interests, and expertise to discover what you really want to do for a living, then I highly recommend this book!

Excellent Roadmap
Is this book rocket science? No. However, "10 Insider Secrets Career Transition Workshop" is a great roadmap to making a career change.

The questions asked in the workshop made me think about things I didn't realize were so important in finding a job. It also helped me articulate in my mind what aspects of jobs I enjoyed and what I did not.

Overall, I thought the process the book took me through was just the right medicine I needed in this difficult time of change.
