Title and subject don't match.
Hands on and rigorousA very well written book on Risk Budgeting from a modern perspective. VAR methodologies, stress testing and working examples are very well written and a must for anyone wanting to either get into the risk measurement/ management field or an advanced practitioner in the field. I would highly recommend this book for someone wanting to get the both the theoritical and hands on practical approach to risk measurement of equity and fixed income portfolios.

Political NOT practicalIf you can get past the author's jaded political views on the Canadian healthcare system and his rose colored view of Social Security's viability, you'll find not much more than a simple worksheet by which to calculate your post-retirement needs.
The practical suggestions (there are some) are limited and at times obvious.....ie: Ignore Wall Street's rules of thumb on how much you'll need to live on. The rest is NY Times op-ed filler. What a shame.....he had the right idea...just didn't follow through.

Retire on Less Than You Think by Fred BrockThis work focuses your attention on the amount of money needed
during retirement-taking into consideration the
best places to retire and control of unnecessary expenditures.
Bellington, Washington, Iowa City and Sarasota, Florida are
cited as preferred retirement communities. Strategies to retire
slightly later can yield significant benefits in the size of
the monthly income resulting from social security. In some cases,
a delay of even 3-4 years in retirement can result in getting
a 50% increase in the monthly allotment. The author recommends
to simplify life in order to maximize the benefit from your
monthly income. This book is an excellent supplemental reference
for your retirement planning. As such, it is well worth the price.

Hope for retirees!Fred Brock's book is essential reading for babyboomers who want to retire early. It challenges conventional thinking about how much money is required for a comfortable retirement. The chapter on coping with health insurance is especially helpful.
Many people fail to anticipate that their living costs are going to shrink as their children become independent, their mortgages are paid off and work related expenses go away. That's the message of the book: That you don't need as much as financial services advisers often suggest you will need.

There are about fourty pages of three hundred that actually deal with risk budgeting: the first 153 pages are an outline of VaR. Its a fair introduction to VaR, but the title is misleading.
