Confusing, convoluted, not worth your money.
This text is one of the most hard-to-read finance book I have ever come across. The authors must have been mentally retarded or on drugs, or something. Instead of explaining a concept in one page Brigham and company will take up to 30 pages to explain in the most confusing twisted language. I pity the student who has to go thru what I went thru to learn intermediate finance concepts. This book is the biggest waste of your hard earned money!

I wasn't too impressed with this text. I found that many of the chapters were incredibly verbose, and seemed to confuse me even more in some instances. Perhaps one of the problems (obviously not Brigham's fault) was that my prof "wizzed" through some of these chapters, so reading the "wordy, never-ending" chapters was overwhelming. Further, I think that some concepts could have been more simplified, when instead Brigham seemed to ramble and "lost" me.

In short, I think some "academics" (profs, grad students, etc) might be impressed with the depth with which Brigham wrote. However, not all of the students are on the same level, and this must be taken into consideration when the author revises the text. We are using the text as a guide for learning, not as a means to evaluate the author's aptitude in the field of finance...

Does this book really have a value?
For [money], I will assume, you wi;; expect more than a book written with font size 12. Very generic context, with a lot of information on how to write your cv, and general carrier guide chapters. I want to be an interim, so I do not need to read thi sstuff. This is not the start of my carrier, so my needs are a bit more advance. But, the book will not offer you the sort of information that you really need. For your [money] you probably get [money] worth of valuable information. I honestly could not recommend this book to anyone ...

Hope that this helps,

Spiros.

A great book on a company's hidden assets
An impressive business book on the "exotic" topic of intangible assets, the importance of which has so dramatically increased during the last decade, especially so for knowledge-based companies. What makes the book special is that it strikes a fine balance between practical insights, case studies and applications on the one hand, and state-of-the-art theoretical concepts on the other. Because of this, it has a strong appeal to both practitioners and theorists.

The book has an ambitious and multi-faceted focus: It not only addresses the scope and functions of intangible assets, but it also discusses related topics such as accounting for intangibles; the implications of intangibles for internal and external reporting; and the foundations of a new management system. The book is carefully investigated, well-written and nicely structured. Several interviews with leading specialists such as Leif Edvinsson (a pioneer in the area of Intellectual Capital management), Baruch Lev (an expert on intangibles accounting) and David Norton (co-creator of the Balanced Scorecard concept) provide also a helpful bridge between the practice and theory of managing intangible assets.

I strongly recommend this book if you want to have a better understanding of the comprehensive role and implications of a company's intangible assets. It is also a helpful resource for students and professionals in the areas of strategic management, financial performance management and strategic accounting. It will challenge and help you to discover new ways to create business value.
