To reaffirm and not teachI felt that there was not enough spent on the subject itself and more of a dummy's version of getting acquainted with Finance. If you've ever taken one course in Finance, you wiz through the book without absorbing any more than you remembered.
Innovative management approach to financial analysis.Despite the title of this book, it does not really cover the traditional "finance" topics such as weighted average/marginal cost of capital, portfolio theory, capital structure decisions, investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, etc. In my opinion, most of the book deals with managerial accounting-----but it does a great job doing so! In fact, this book contains the best treatment of cost volume profit analysis that I've ever seen----and I am a CPA with 10 years experience. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to manage a company "by the numbers".
Should be entitled Managerial AccountingGreat, straightforward approach to explaining what managers do, and should, look for in the numbers periodically generated by their accounting systems.

A Bit Too TheoreticalThis is not a bad book. It covers a lot of ground. But at times it gets a bit too theoretical, rather than being down to earth. I saw the reviews that liked it, but several of them were by financial managers. For those of us who are not financial managers, there is quite of a bit of mathematics and theory. For example, for capital budgeting there is a whole chapter of mathematical formulas with a small paragraph saying no one really uses the formulas - they use calculators or computers. But there was no discussion about what calculator or computer program to buy or how to do the calculations with a calculator or computer. The book is also pretty much out of date, espeically in areas like the tax chapter.
Easy to read and understand for the non-technical personThis book does a great job of helping managers understand the financial world. It takes the basics of finance and accounting and describes them in a very non-technical and easy to understand manner. I am a degreed accountant with a strong finance and economics background and find it difficult to explain things to business owners and managers in a way that makes sense to them. This book resolves that problem. By the time they read through it once we can at least talk together and I don't feel like I am using a foreign language.
A very valuable book that should be required reading for anyone who goes into business for theirself or moves up the corporate ladder to a position where understanding these things is beneficial for their career. While it is not a treatise on the details of accounting and finance it will give you a broad enough scope to understand what you should be doing and why things work the way that they do. A recommended read.

Great book when paired with another one. This is a very readable book about business finance and accounting. I have used it, along with a study guide I prepared for it, to help train people who were becoming instructors for business training classes. It certainly helps to be able to discuss the material in the book with someone who knows more about what's in it than you do. Even so, Droms does a good job with his material and you can use the book for later reference -- I do. You'll get even more out of this book if you order another book to go with it. That book is "Business Basics Bestseller #1." [...]

Among the God-given liberties of Americans is the right to blast governmental bureaucracy. It is now in particular vogue to blame a bloated government for most national problems. But there is another bureaucracy equally as damaging or worse, argues David M. Gordon, a professor at the New York School for Social Research in New York, who died in March at age 51. He contends that a huge inefficient bureaucracy of corporate bosses hoards a disproportionate share of the national income at the expense of the people who are doing the real work and, in turn, leads to conflict and tension. Gordon provides a wealth of statistical evidence to support this theory.

Missed opportunityIf corporate America is as bloated, inefficient, and hopeless as the author suggests (suggested), why not seize upon this opportunity to start your own business? Don't teach us how to cry with you. Stimulate us to take advantage of this company shortsightedness and create our own efficient, profitable, and exciting businesses. I know that this is a harder task than to just sit back and whine but such a skill makes the difference between a truly innovative book and one merely soaked with the reader's salt water tears.
Powerful bookThis was David Gordon's last book, as he was unfortunately felled shortly after its release by an untimely heart attack. The depth of scholarship and passion this man brought to "Fat and Mean" makes his passing especially sad. Gordon's book exhibits his twin strengths of intellectual acumen and the ability to write plainly, without much jargon.
Gordon's book should be read by partisans of both right and left, mostly because the typical book (ideological orientation aside) on economic policy is dismal. Its thesis--that US workers are being crushed by in a squeeze play by the American managerial class--is backed up by extensive references and research. If you are seeking a provocative look at the state of workers today, this book deserves your prompt attention.
