Capstone
I read this book recently, just after my first year in business school. It provided a tremendous capstone to all of the major core fields here and integrates them naturally in the context of how a business should be looked at. There is a great deal of information compressed into these chapters, with a wide review of current thinking.

I will unquestionably value this as a reference to remind me of the powerful lessons learned at b-school......

If you can't beat them join them
As a member of the proletariot, I have found after years of immense slumber that value investing is the way to go. True kapitalism is not perfect, but communism seems far worse. So in conclusion Komrads, value investing is the best way for the proletariot to enter the bougerousie.

good reading for business minds
I would strongly recommend the book for all MBAs, serious investors.

It provides valuable insights into the art of investing and conducting business. The practical aspects of what is not taught in B schools are covered in the book.

Tom Peters may be the only management guru who's most famous for being wrong. In Search of Excellence, his bestselling first effort, praised companies like People Express and IBM for their management, but those companies tanked soon after Excellence came out in 1982. Peters quickly reversed course and became one of the harshest critics of the type of management he once described as excellent. Soon he was advocating MBWA (Management By Walking Around), and by the time he wrote Thriving on Chaos in 1987, he was describing ways to make rapid, innovative changes in the way American companies do business.

Robert Heller is harshly critical of Peters's Excellence-era ideas and only mildly scornful of his Chaos precepts. Still, in Business Masterminds: Tom Peters, he manages to come up with "Masterclass" lessons drawn from Peters's works. For example, from Excellence he culls lessons such as "Any remedy is only good for as long as it works; do not become slavishly committed to a modus operandi forever." From Chaos he takes lessons on such topics as getting everyone in an organization involved in change and developing "total customer responsiveness." By the '90s, Peters was exhorting managers to embrace not just chaos, but lunacy. Among the lessons Heller pulls from this stage of Peters's career: "Hire a few genuine off-the-wall types" and "develop small units with their own personalities and disrespectful chiefs." The book concludes with a third Masterclass that is probably the most useful in the slim volume. It shows how to use Peters's latest ideas to make sense of the madness of modern business, in the management of one's own career, and in the running of an organization. Which will have to suffice until Peters changes his mind again about the way companies should be run. --Lou Schuler

Peter Drucker, the teacher/journalist/consultant/historian who popularized "management by objective" and identified the "knowledge society," was among the first to unapologetically treat management as a discipline. Peter Drucker, a volume in Dorling Kindersley's Business Masterminds series, looks at theories Drucker has detailed in his own works since 1939 and breaks them down in a way that's accessible to a general business audience. Robert Heller, the founding editor of Management Today magazine and author of several entries in the series, begins with a biography to help readers understand Drucker. He then divides Drucker's principles into five basic themes: organizing for success, the art of management, managing by objectives and self-control, harnessing the power of innovation, and responsible knowledge management, which he dissects concisely and explains clearly. In the final section, for example, Heller addresses the concept of moral responsibility by citing the origins and consequences of Drucker's "strictly limited faith in the power of free enterprise, which in his opinion is only as good as its contribution to society." As with other books in the series, "Masterclasses" are interspersed between these sections to distill theories into easily absorbed bits of practical advice. --Howard Rothman

Even the staunchest of critics will usually concede Microsoft and its leader have demonstrated a remarkable flair for business over the years--whether or not, as a federal court has ruled, they boosted their efforts through improper means. Bill Gates, an entry in the Business Masterminds series from Dorling Kindersley, accessibly presents this management side for a general business audience. Robert Heller, founding editor of Management Today magazine and author of several books in the series, opens by acknowledging his subject's talent for "combining widely known technology with practical application of extraordinarily powerful business ideas." After a biographical sketch and brief mention of the antitrust case, Heller looks into the way the computer industry and its biggest player have reshaped the way we live and work. He then analyzes how Gates built his company (hired the super smart, managed knowledge effectively), developed the world's leading software products (invested in research, recognized opportunities), and turned "vision into value" (took big risks, hedged his bets). As with other books in this series, periodic Masterclasses are included that break the relevant business practices down into easily understandable and eminently practical bulleted points. --Howard Rothman

The business philosophy of Gates as a study in management
Exact figures would no doubt be elusive, but certainly one of the most recognized names is that of Bill Gates. Despite some of the negative circumstances of his success, it is gratifying to realize that he has star power to rival that of any other celebrity. Business and intellectual leaders contribute so much to the world, it is high time that they are treated as the stars they are.
This book is an examination of the Gates/Microsoft phenomenon from the perspective of business strategies. It is a combination of a brief historical record of the development of Microsoft and the reasons for that success. These reasons are then examined as case studies for how to succeed in the area of business management. The examples include the successes as well as the failures of Microsoft over the years. The dramatic changes that took place when Microsoft finally discovered the Internet will no doubt become the model for how a large company can change direction quickly and successfully. For all his faults, Bill Gates has shown a knack, albeit sometimes ruthless, for being one of the best business people of all time. His actions should be studied, both for emulation and avoidance.
Since most of the historical record was known to me, my interest was primarily in how the events were used to describe the introductory principles of management. In that area, the book is well-designed. The case studies are easy to follow and certainly relevant to the modern business climate. The level of the presentation is such that it can be understood by anyone interested in basic management.
It will be years before the historical record concerning Bill Gates is finalized. Until then, it should be studied as a modern success story to be examined for the lessons that can be learned. This book presents those tales in a manner that is neutral concerning the controversial aspects of the richest man in the world who still flies economy as an example to his employees.

A Computer in Every Home
Bill Gates originally wanted to create "a tool for the Information Age that could magnify your brainpower instead of just your muscle power." He saw digital tools as the way to enhance the unique powers we all possess. For academics and techies it is pure heaven to share information online. Bill Gates predicted that the Internet would help to bring people together instead of causing "society to fly apart."

Either you love Bill Gates or you loathe him. I'm in the "love" category for many reasons. For one, I just love the software and it makes my life a dream. While he may be controversial, he seems to have a great heart for philanthropy and is well known for The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a focus on scholarships, computers in schools and world health. So while many envy his wealth, you have to look at his generosity and how he is helping to change the lives of children all over the world.

"It's possible to save millions of children's lives just by applying the technology that's here today." ~Bill Gates
