The New Precious Metals Market: How the Changes in Fundamentals Are Creating Extraordinary Profit Opportunities
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 January, 1998)
Author: Philip Gotthelf
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

Great for the professional but a 'must' for the novice.
Wanting to diversify my portfolio I figured I needed this book. Oh, how right I was. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of precious metals which in itself would be well worth the price paid but it also provides great psychological insights into why precious metals gain and loss their luster during times of tumultuous markets. The author has an easy to understand and witty style that makes it a pleasant research vehicle. Good luck to all, Todd

An excellent and timely analysis of precious metals.
THE NEW PRECIOUS METALS MARKET provides the most comprehensive and up to date analysis of precious metals currently available. This is a no-nonsense and objective review of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium as investments, trading vehicles, inflation hedges, and plain old commodities. Philip Gotthelf does not provide the typical sugar coated view that "nothing is as good as gold." Instead, he details realities facing precious metals which include digital photography's impact upon silver, new gold extraction technology, technical cycles, and even stock investing.

This book avoids complexity and gets down to business. Why should you consider precious metals in your portfolio? The answer in the book is a surprise to many. Philip Gotthelf does not take the traditional line that these metals are good investments. Instead, he gives pragmatic reasons why investors should avoid accumulating hard inventories in the "new economic environment." He covers metals as monetary instruments. He touches upon scandals like Bre-X and how investors can avoid getting caught.

The book is full of charts and illustrations that are clear and easy to understand. In a time when economic uncertainty is at a peak, this book is essential for anyone considering gold, silver or the other metals as investments.

A Very Difficult Theory to understand-forget it
This book is so difficult to understand, where is this guy coming from. It leaves everthing to intuition, if the profile lookes correct the market can still either go up or down so were back to sqare one, I think your better off looking at candlestick charts to interpret profiles etc.

An honest book
If you are just beginning trading, I cannot recommend this book. Tom has pretty good ideas on his books, and this one is no exception! The thing is, this book won't be easy to grasp if you still don't have the basic know how about this business.

Tom explains a lot of indicators (how they are calculated and variations about the way you can use them) on this book, including his own - If you use Tradestation, you'll love using his indicators on a backtest of your favorite markets - but won't teach you how to build a trading plan. But there other books for that chapter!

He also doesn't write in the most clearer of ways - sometimes you'll find yourself rereading several paragraphs back to completely understand some concepts. All in all I consider this to be a valuable book to add to your library with fresh and innovative ideas on some old concepts.

highly recommended--exceptional book for devoted traders
the secret to trading success resides in the practice of discipline and in the adherence to a sound, basic approach to a rigid trading plan. the author ignores the former but discusses in great depth the latte almost to the point of obseession. i'm not criticizing his preoccupation(or fascination) with all variations and aspects of trading models--some simple others more complex--but no one can say they are incomplete. in conclusion i believe a reader can draw value from this book in direct proportion to the amount of time he devotes to learning these priciples. no one said that making money is easy but it is obvious that once the principles the author presents are understood, they should become second nature.

These indicators are on my data terminal
I was surprised when my fellow trader on the desk told me that the DeMark indicators were prevalent throughout the industry and that the Bloombeg, ILX Thomson, CQG, and Reuters machines include these with tgeir services. I have read the authors' bools and have tried to pogram the formulas myself and now realize i could have found them on the machine in front of me. What a pleasant surprise! I love them and they do help my trading and timing.

finally, someone seems to have shared my own experiences
This book was honest, funny, and thoroughly entertaining. Mr. Collins obviously is not afraid to appear less than cool or all-knowledgeable about his subject, but he obviously knows enough to give his reader a ton to think about. In my life, I've encountered many traders who come up with systems, but I haven't met one who doesn't frequently circumvent them. Collins' own experience with such improvisations merely confirms what I've observed--a winning trading approach is incompatible with human emotion. The trades we feel the most sure about are almost always the ones that lose money. But it's obviously hard to stay one-hundred percent committed to a mechanical approach, as Market Rap confirms. I don't know how effective the systems in the book are, (I will get around to testing them), but they seem simple and straight-forward; characteristics that work the best in my portfolios also. Finally, most traders can't get enough of trading books just because they love the subject so much. What's especially cool about this book is, the author obviously shares our passions.

Funny, poignant, harrowing, riveting, highly recommended.
Market Rap: The Odyssey Of A Still-struggling Commodity Trader is the story of Art Collins who left a job with a generous, secure income to pursue the frantic and frenetic life as a full-time floor member of the commodities exchange. In making this transition Collins endured loss of security, the consternation of family, and personal demons that threatened to undermine his dream. Market Rap is funny, poignant, harrowing, and a riveting read. Included throughout Collins personal story are highly effective trading ideas and methods. Market Rap is immensely rewarding reading for anyone who aspires to become a successful commodities broker, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in this significant aspect of the American economic system.
